Now that mobile apps has quickly left browsing the web via the traditional computer, they are now starting to challenge television–and this time are expecting to beat them at their own game. With a large influx of second-screen and companion apps hitting the market this year in addition to the thousands of apps already in existence, mobile and tablet devices are starting to hit the old television screen where it hurts.

According to a new report from San Fransisco-based analysts company Flurry, consumers are spending about 127 minutes per day browsing and interacting with mobile apps, up 35 percent over last year. Desktop browsing, a more traditional way at interacting with the web, has declined to just 70 minutes per day.

Television does indeed still rule the roost, at 168 minutes of consumption per day, however, tablets and mobile devices are not far off. “We ultimately expect apps on tablets and smartphones to challenge broadcast television as the dominant channel for media consumption,” said Flurry CEO Simon Khalaf.

Next year’s numbers could paint a different picture, as the mobile app industry moves into overdrive when it comes to creating companion apps for popular television shows and movies. With user traffic increasing by leaps and bounds as is, it’s only natural to assume that in a year’s time not only will more users be interacting with mobile apps more than they watch television–but in fact they may be watching television through a mobile app.
