Surpassing another key numerical milestone, Apple’s flagship App Store has this week reached over 50 billion downloads, after having gained 10 billion in little over 4 months.
Following a promotional campaign in the store from Apple to promote the upcoming landmark, a prize of a $10,000 App Store gift card was promised to the user that hit ‘download’ on #50,000,000,000. That person turned out to be Brandon Ashmore, from the Ohio town of Mentor (USA), claiming the prize following his purchase of OK Go/Space Inch-developed game Say the Same Thing.
The prize giveaway continued with a consolation for the people responsible for downloads from the landmark number through to #50,000,000,050, with a relatively meagre $500 of online store credit given away to each of those 50 runner-ups.
The milestone was considered a key achievement for Apple to reach, after they had promoted the impending number with an official ’ticker’, along with a list featuring statistics on the service’s most popular apps since the store opened in 2008.
Apple’s Eddy Cue summarised of the 50 billionth download: “The App Store completely transformed how people use their mobile devices and created a thriving app ecosystem that has paid out over $9bn to developers. We’re absolutely floored to cross this milestone in less than five years.”
