It is a fairly common procedure for a store to commemorate the passing of an anniversary by releasing some sort of sales statistic that attracts interest from casual customers, and Apple are looking to do the same after celebrating 5 years of their App Store.
The list of Apple’s most downloaded apps from the store, released yesterday (9 July) ahead of today’s anniversary, revealed that flash game Angry Birds is the leading ‘premium iPhone app’, as well as the second-bestselling premium iPad service (behind Apple’s word processing service Pages).
Complimenting the headlining title, the ‘premium iPhone top 5′ was an exclusively gaming collection, with the well-known titles of Fruit Ninja, Doodle Jump, Cut the Rope, and Angry Birds Seasons ahead of nearest non-gaming release WhatsApp Messenger, while most of those games in their ‘HD’ guises populated much of the iPad premium list, albeit in different positions.
The other top 10 lists revealed by Apple were relating to free services, with Facebook being the unsurprising name at the top of the iPhone list (ahead of the likes of Pandora Radio, YouTube, Twitter, and Temple Run), although it was only 6th on the all-time bestsellers list of the iPad, behind 1st-placed Skype for iPad, along with The Weather Channel, Netflix, Angry Birds HD Free, and Kindle‘s reader.
Away from the best in Apple’s store’s history, the present sees limited-time offers come into play as of today to commemorate the ’5th birthday’, with both gaming (including Infinity Blade 2, Badland, and Tiny Wings), and non-gaming (including Day One and Traktor DJ, amongst others) apps released for free to celebrate the milestone. Will the ‘freemium’ platform give any of those titles a step towards breaking one of the lists below come the App Store’s 10th anniversary?
